Earlier this week, Steel Wool Studios made an exciting announcement regarding the release date of “Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic.” It’s set to debut on June 13th for PS5 and PC. However, there’s been a twist in the tale—despite initial showings on PSVR 2, any mention of support for Sony’s VR headset has mysteriously vanished, stirring quite a bit of speculation.
At PAX West 2024, attendees got their first taste of “Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic” via a playable demo on PSVR 2, setting expectations for a unique VR and flatscreen hybrid experience from the renowned XR studio.
Since its founding in 2012, Steel Wool Studios has been no stranger to the VR scene, having developed a slew of VR-native titles. Among these are “Hello Neighbor Search and Rescue” in 2023, “FNAF: Help Wanted” in 2019, and its follow-up “FNAF: Help Wanted 2” in 2024.
Now, with the release date out in the open, observant fans might notice the conspicuous absence of PSVR 2 support in the latest promotional content. Even the game’s listing on the PlayStation Store, which earlier suggested optional VR compatibility, has been stripped of such details.
The only recent nod to PSVR 2 came in the form of an official PlayStation post on February 12th when the release date was announced. Strangely, this post has since disappeared.
For now, Steel Wool Studios is keeping mum on whether PSVR 2 support might make a comeback. Similarly, there’s no word yet on whether the upcoming PC versions, set to hit the Epic Games Store and Steam, will boast VR features.
We’ve reached out for comment from Steel Wool Studios and are awaiting their response. As soon as we have more information—whether it be a delay in the VR mode’s launch or an alternate release strategy—we’ll make sure to keep you updated.
