Dragon is a fascinating element in Monster Hunter Wilds, showing up on weapons as a type of damage you can use and on armor as a resistance against what you might face. But saying, “This does Dragon damage,” isn’t as uncomplicated as stating something like, “This deals Fire damage.”
Let’s dive into what the Dragon element means in Monster Hunter Wilds, explore which monsters drop Dragon materials, and determine which foes you should be wielding Dragon against.
So, what exactly is Dragon damage in the game? Much like Fire, Ice, or Lightning, Dragon is its own element. However, it stands out from these typical elements, as its primary usefulness is against a specific group: other dragons.
Dragons are notably vulnerable to Dragon weapons, which is quite unique, as most creatures typically resist attacks of their own element. Yet, they can counter with a debuff called Dragonblight. This debuff is exclusively for monsters to use; players can’t inflict it, only endure it.
Dragonblight temporarily nullifies the Dragon element on your weapon. Since weapons infused with elements often trade off some raw damage for enhanced elemental effects, Dragonblight significantly cuts down your combat effectiveness. If you find yourself facing dragons, keep an eye out for Dragonblight and have a Nulberry ready to cleanse it if you get afflicted.
Interestingly, Dragon armor offers less resistance to monsters with Dragon, Lightning, and Ice elements.
What about crafting Dragon weapons? At Monster Hunter Wilds’ launch, only a select few dragon-type enemies inhabit the game, offering limited chances to forge these powerful weapons. If you’re aiming to create a Dragon weapon to take on some of the game’s formidable endgame creatures, target these specific hunts:
(Note: Not all weapon types are compatible with materials from the Guardian Ebony Odogaron.)
And which monsters should you target with Dragon damage? While Dragon weapons might be limited, the foes weak to them are not. Beyond the previously mentioned fierce enemies, you’ll also deal extra damage to all Guardian-type monsters, along with some of the series’ veterans like Rathalos and Rathian.
Here’s a comprehensive list of monsters you should wield Dragon weapons against in your battles.
