Soul Paint offers a unique VR journey that blends the art of 3D drawing with deep personal reflection.
Unveiled at SXSW 2024, this intriguing project by Sarah Ticho and Niki Smit, with the voice talent of Rosario Dawson, invites participants to explore their emotions through immersive technology. Imagine becoming a 3D figure floating in a mystical realm, where you can paint your feelings directly onto your virtual self.
This experience employs body-mapping techniques infused with virtual reality to help users delve into their emotional landscapes. The creators aim to “foster empathy and social connectedness by witnessing others’ lived experiences,” and you have the opportunity to share these emotions with others when the session concludes.
I had the chance to dive into Soul Paint at the NewImages Festival 2025 during the XR Market, spending 20 immersive minutes in this virtual world. It all starts with a powerful question: “Where are you feeling?” Initially, I found this introspective query puzzling, but Soul Paint soon drew me into a spiritual and ethereal environment that wholly encourages expressing oneself physically.
The experience that unfolds feels soothing and peaceful, offering a sense of self-realization. While I may not be the next Piccaso, creating my virtual art was exactly what I needed at that moment. You can sketch across your virtual body and even leave a voice note for others to discover later. It’s a touching way to share emotions when words fall short.
Soul Paint serves as a reflective mirror within VR. Although it’s a linear experience with certain limitations, it offers a profound sense of embodiment and personal expression that I found captivating. It’s an innovative way to connect with others, and though it might lack depth as a comprehensive experience, its thoughtful, meditative layers make up for it. I’m eager to see more ventures like this in the future.
As for now, there’s no word on a home release for Soul Paint, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated with any new information.
