Sony has finally addressed the lawsuit put forth by ex-Bungie executive, Christopher Barrett.
In their official response, highlighted by the gaming publication Game File, Sony unveiled a series of text messages exchanged between Barrett and several female staff members at Bungie. According to Sony, these messages illustrate what they describe as Barrett’s “pattern of misconduct.”
Barrett parted ways with Bungie in March 2024, following allegations of inappropriate behavior toward female colleagues. He subsequently filed a lawsuit, claiming wrongful termination and seeking $200 million in damages. Barrett argues that his departure deprived him of $45 million in benefits tied to Sony’s acquisition of Bungie in 2022.
Sony maintains in its filings that Barrett was dismissed for allegedly pursuing a “lower-level female employee,” with whom he had no direct work relationship. Initially engaging in friendly chatter, he reportedly began crossing professional lines by subtly commenting on her appearance and expressing romantic interest. The filing suggests Barrett sought an unprofessional level of intimacy with his victims.
The documents also include excerpts from Barrett’s text and direct message conversations with the women involved.
Barrett’s legal representatives responded to Sony’s filing through Game File, criticizing the selective presentation of evidence and accusing Sony of making unsubstantiated claims to justify his dismissal without providing what he was rightfully owed. They highlighted the absence of complete text message exchanges and detailed conversations in Sony’s evidence, arguing that there is no solid legal basis for Barrett’s termination.
Barrett remains optimistic, asserting that once all evidence is on the table, it will demonstrate that Sony orchestrated a plan to oust him from his position and deprive him of the equity awards he earned over 25 years of dedicated service to the firm.
