PLAYISM, Team Ladybug, and WSS Playground deliver an incredible Metroidvania gem with Blade Chimera for the Nintendo Switch, a game that’s a must-play for any fan of the genre. Let’s dive into why this game is such a standout experience.
In Blade Chimera, you step into the shoes of Shin, a demon hunter who unfortunately has no recollection of his past. You’re not alone in this journey, though. You team up with Lux, a shape-shifting demon who interestingly takes on the form of a sword. It’s a peculiar partnership, especially for a demon hunter, but it works wonderfully in the game. Lux isn’t just about offense, though. She can protect you from attacks and even transform into a platform to reach inaccessible areas as you explore a futuristic Osaka drenched in neon and shadow.
Once you’re immersed in the game, you’ll guide Shin using either the left thumbstick or the D-Pad. Jump with A, unleash attacks using the B button, while Y lets you perform secondary moves, depending on your current gear. Dodging with L is key to evading enemy blows, and tapping R activates equipped skills, although your magic points (MP) will take a hit when you do.
Lux shines on the X button. She can not only attack or shield but also become objects from the past if certain conditions are met, offering you various tactical advantages. You can even toss Lux to grapple with certain points, opening up more platforming possibilities. Battling enemies with her will also slowly replenish your health, which is a handy perk.
Every demon and boss you vanquish rewards you with experience points. Accumulate enough, and Shin levels up, leading to improved attack and defense stats. Explore thoroughly to uncover hidden items that enhance your maximum health and magic points—essentials for surviving tougher encounters.
As you defeat foes, they drop money, which becomes crucial for purchasing various items—like Life Elixirs for health, Energy Drinks for MP, and Miracle Mixes for curing ailments. You can also upgrade your arsenal or sell unwanted items. And don’t forget, side missions from HQ operators can provide extra cash when needed.
Skill Points become available as you level up, and these are instrumental for progression. Access new abilities via the Unlock Skills menu by pressing +. Skills like the Air Dash help dodge mid-air and clear jump gaps, while the double jump skill allows Shin to reach even higher obstacles or pair with Air Dash for extended travel.
In essence, Blade Chimera is a top-notch Metroidvania that demands attention on the Nintendo Switch. Shin, with his mysterious past, and Lux, his unpredictable ally, offer a captivating gameplay experience set against the backdrop of a stunning cyberpunk Osaka.
Always make sure to take down every enemy you come across. They don’t just provide the necessary experience and cash to purchase new items, weapons, and equipment; defeating them might also yield rare item drops, like powerful candy for healing or superior weapons. In my adventure, I lucked out with a powerful Chakram dropped by an Amenbozu—five times stronger than any weapon I’d bought! Priced at $19.99, Blade Chimera promises an adventure well worth its price.
