Japanese developer Atlus delivered one of the standout hits of 2024 with their fantasy RPG, Metaphor: ReFantazio. Despite a crowded release calendar featuring heavyweights like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Persona 3 Reload, Metaphor found its own spotlight and captivated players. Many were already optimistic about its quality, given that it comes from the creative team behind the beloved Persona 5. Even so, it managed to surpass the high expectations held by eager fans.
Its October 2024 release quickly became a celebration within the gaming community. Metaphor: ReFantazio wowed critics and secured enviable ratings above 90 on platforms such as OpenCritic and Metacritic. It even snagged a nomination for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024. In terms of sales, it made history by selling over a million copies on its launch day, claiming the title of Atlus’ fastest-selling game ever. Considering this monumental success, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Atlus looks to elevate Metaphor into a major franchise akin to Shin Megami Tensei and Persona.
Although Atlus has nearly four decades of history, many of its titles haven’t penetrated mainstream consciousness. Games like Trauma Center and Etrian Odyssey haven’t become iconic names alongside giants like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. Besides the massive followings of Shin Megami Tensei and Persona, Atlus hasn’t seen extensive pop-cultural reach with most of its releases. The two series combined have nearly 100 titles, consistently offering new additions since the 80s.
Interestingly, Persona games are actually spin-offs from the Shin Megami Tensei series, making them all part of a broader gaming universe.
Katsura Hashino, the director behind Metaphor: ReFantazio, expressed aspirations to grow this game into a flagship franchise for Atlus. In an interview with Famitsu, Hashino mentioned having numerous ideas for a sequel, although he hasn’t committed to any concrete plans yet. If Atlus decides to pursue this path, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine a future where new entries in the Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, and Metaphor series are released in rotation. The rich, sprawling world built in Metaphor: ReFantazio offers ample material for sequels or spin-offs. Exploring different genres through this universe, perhaps with a strategic spin inspired by titles like Tactics Ogre and Persona 5 Tactica, could be an exciting venture.
Though official confirmations are scarce, there’s buzzing speculation about a mobile Metaphor spin-off being developed in collaboration with Netflix Games. If true, this project’s official announcement might be some time away. Meanwhile, Atlus fans can likely anticipate a wave of new Shin Megami Tensei and Persona titles, possibly getting a peek at these anticipated projects in the near future.
