Strange World stands out as one of Disney’s most overlooked masterpieces, no doubt about it. This exciting adventure flick masterfully blends the familiar Disney theme of generational trauma with a thrilling narrative following the Clade family across three generations. Each family member has a distinct vision of what their family should represent. As the grandfather, father, and son navigate their personal beliefs, the film treats viewers to some of the most breathtaking animation Disney has ever created, although not enough people got to see it in theaters. Drawing from adventure classics like Indiana Jones, Strange World also interweaves compelling environmental themes set against the backdrop of a spectacular alien universe.
The world in this film is as strange as promised, boasting extraordinary landscapes, vibrant characters both human and fantastical, and mesmerizing creatures that live up to the film’s title. Amid all its peculiarities, the movie’s central conflicts remain profoundly relatable, focusing on the Clade family’s struggle to comprehend one another. It’s only when they’re pushed into dangerous, uncharted territories that the obvious becomes clear.
Sadly, Disney dropped the ball on the film’s marketing, leading to one of the most significant box office flops in history. If you’re subscribed to Disney+, you can watch it there, and let me tell you, it’s absolutely fantastic. It really deserved a lot more recognition than it got.
