If there’s one constant in the gaming world, it’s the cycle of games being announced and then vanishing into thin air. And unfortunately, it looks like PlatinumGames’ Project G.G. might just be the latest casualty—another game seemingly lost before we knew much about it.
Do you remember Project G.G.? I can’t blame you if it slipped your mind. The game was announced in 2020, but after that, PlatinumGames didn’t share much. The project’s momentum seemed further stalled when Hideki Kamiya, a co-founder and key figure at the studio, parted ways with the company at the close of 2023. Naturally, this left many of us wondering if the game would ever see the light of day post-Kamiya, and signs now strongly suggest that it won’t. If you visit PlatinumGames’ official website and check out their game catalog, you’ll spot ten titles currently on the roster. This includes fan favorites like the Bayonetta series, the critically acclaimed Nier: Automata, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and the recently teased Ninja Gaiden 4.
A trip down memory lane via the Wayback Machine uncovers something intriguing. The same page previously listed a total of 22 games, showcasing collaborations like Transformers: Devastation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, and The Legend of Korra, along with entirely homegrown projects such as Madworld and the notably unsuccessful Babylon’s Fall. Even though these titles are no longer on the main list, they still maintain dedicated pages. Except, that is, for Project G.G. Its page has vanished, with the URL now leading straight back to the homepage, a strong hint that the project is indeed shelved indefinitely.
This development isn’t a huge shocker, especially considering Kamiya’s departure over a year ago. PlatinumGames’ activities have been somewhat hazy lately, marked by some noticeable turnover within the company. Yet the upcoming Ninja Gaiden should keep the studio engines running for a bit longer, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the uncertainty.
