NVIDIA recently opened up about the role they played in crafting a custom processor for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. They’ve stated that the new console will boast a graphics performance that’s a whopping ten times greater than the original Nintendo Switch.
At the core of this enhancement is a NVIDIA GPU equipped with RT Cores and Tensor Cores. These components are designed to deliver breathtaking visuals and AI-powered improvements. The Tensor Cores are key to enhancing graphics through artificial intelligence while maintaining energy efficiency, whereas the RT Cores work tirelessly to heighten realism in games with lifelike lighting and authentic reflections.
For those who enjoy gaming on the go, the handheld experience promises to be seamless and smooth, free from any screen tearing. This is made possible by NVIDIA’s G-SYNC technology, which supports a variable refresh rate for a more fluid gameplay experience.
Discussing the comprehensive upgrades, the company shared in a blog post, “Our efforts have amounted to 1,000 engineer-years dedicated to refining every aspect—from system architecture and chip design to creating a custom GPU, APIs, and top-tier development tools. With these advancements, the Nintendo Switch 2 is set to offer significant improvements.”
In terms of capabilities, the new console will support up to 4K gaming when docked for TV use and deliver up to 120 frames per second at 1080p in handheld mode. It will also feature high dynamic range visuals and AI upscaling designed to enhance graphic sharpness and ensure smoother gameplay.
Elaborating further, NVIDIA adds, “Our new RT Cores introduce real-time ray tracing, bringing more realistic lighting, reflections, and shadows to create worlds that feel truly immersive.
Meanwhile, the Tensor Cores are instrumental in AI-driven features like Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), which enhances resolution and clarity without compromising image quality. These cores also facilitate AI-powered face tracking and background removal for video chats, elevating the social gaming and streaming experience.”
Gamers worldwide can look forward to getting their hands on the Nintendo Switch 2 when it hits store shelves on June 5, 2025, with a price tag of £395.99 in the UK and $449.99 in the US.
