ILM and Lucasfilm have unveiled their next immersive journey into the Star Wars universe: Star Wars: Beyond Victory – A Mixed Reality Playset. This new game is exclusively set to launch on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, and it promises to take fans back to the period of the Han Solo prequel, Solo: A Star Wars Story, from 2018.
While details are scarce at the moment, there’s a buzz around the potential for some thrilling podracing action. ILM has teased that players will have the chance to meet with Volo Bolus, an iconic podracer, and even team up with the legendary Sebulba for what they describe as an adrenaline-pumping, engine-roaring mixed reality adventure.
Given its description as a ‘Playset’, we might expect a collection of mixed reality mini-games, although ILM is keeping those details under wraps for now. Typically, ILM is known for its careful and strategic release of information for its XR games, slowly unveiling characters and special game elements as the launch approaches. However, we’re still waiting on an exact release date or an initial trailer.
Exciting news is on the horizon, though. Attendees of the upcoming Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Tokyo, set for April 18-20, will be able to get a first look and hands-on experience with the game. Over a dozen demo stations will be set up, where Meta plans to showcase demo versions of their previous VR successes, including Vader Immortal and Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge.
But why dive into mixed reality? According to Jose Perez III, the director of Star Wars: Beyond Victory, mixed reality offers a unique opportunity to enhance immersion. “It allows us to bring a galaxy far, far away into players’ living rooms in a way that’s truly unprecedented,” he explains.
Moreover, Meta likely plays a significant role in the financial backing of this mixed reality venture, much like it has supported ILM’s previous Star Wars VR projects over the years.
