Jim Carrey recently stepped back into the shoes of the iconic, mustachioed villain Dr. Robotnik in Sonic 3. Now, he’s hinted at the possibility of reprising this role in future Sonic films like a potential Sonic 4—if, of course, the concept sounds enjoyable enough to him.
This revelation came after Carrey emerged from semi-retirement specifically for Sonic 3. During a red carpet appearance, he humorously admitted that what truly lured him back was the simple need for cash, quipping that he had “bought a lot of stuff.” Previously, he’d joked that only a script “written in gold ink” with a significant message could coax him from his hiatus.
In an interview with the Japanese YouTube channel Cinema Today, Carrey addressed the idea of appearing in more Sonic movies. “I’m definitely open,” he shared. He explained that usually, people approach him with ideas, and if his reaction is, ‘that sounds fun,’ he’s in. He doesn’t feel tied to anything unless it genuinely piques his interest.
“I love this crew, the team behind these movies, and the fans,” Carrey continued. “There’s a fantastic energy, tremendous feedback, with fans even suggesting new ideas. They’ve been incredibly helpful. It feels like we’re all making this movie together.”
At one point in the video, Carrey jokes about “power-resting between projects,” pulling a face that might not rival his famous Grinch expression but certainly deserves an 8 out of 10 for effort, accompanied by a playful sound.
If nothing else, Carrey’s humor offers a welcome distraction from reading about his past controversial views on vaccines or his foray into NFTs on his Wikipedia page.
Meanwhile, the writers of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Pat Casey and Josh Miller, have been discussing—since late last year—other games they might be interested in adapting. It seems the universe of Sonic continues to expand, both on and off the screen.
