Days Gone Remastered is set to hit the PlayStation 5 on April 25, offering an enhanced experience that takes full advantage of the power of the PS5 and PS5 Pro. Along with visual upgrades, players can enjoy new game modes like Horde Assault, Permadeath, and Speedrun, which will also be available to PC players through the Broken Road DLC. Whether it’s your first time journeying through the world of Days Gone or you’re ready to get back on the Drifter bike, there’s plenty of fresh content to uncover. One of the most exciting new elements is the Horde Assault mode, an arcade-style survival challenge. Before you dive in, take a moment to watch the gameplay trailer below—it’s packed with thrilling highlights.
What is Horde Assault mode?
Horde Assault is designed to test your mettle, throwing you into intense gameplay where the aim is to achieve the highest score while enduring waves of increasingly difficult enemies. You’ll face larger hordes and antagonistic creatures like Breakers, Reachers, and even the terrifying Rager bears. The mode transforms the chaotic Days Gone landscape into a battleground that grows tougher the longer you survive. It underscores the heart of Days Gone’s open world with its “This World Comes For You” ethos. Jump into Horde Assault and show those Freakers you mean business.
Imagine dropping into Cascade with just a sidearm in your hand. You’ll need to battle through initial waves of Freakers to reach your Drifter bike—a crucial means of transportation across the map. Keep an eye out for Supply Boxes scattered throughout these treacherous areas as they provide powerful weaponry, including a flamethrower not found in the Story mode. With over 20 weapons available, each Supply Box might hold the key to your survival during your next horde confrontation. Just remember, the contents are randomized with each new start.
As you brave the onslaught, completing Side Jobs becomes crucial in refilling your resources and earning extra XP. These mini-tasks can make all the difference, especially when hundreds of Freakers are hot on your trail. If you manage to hold out for 30 minutes on any given map, prepare yourself for the Ultimate Horde—a relentless, never-ending challenge that’ll push your survival instincts to the limit.
Survive
Leveling up in the game rewards you with unique in-mode bonuses, such as never-before-playable characters, new patch cosmetics, and Injectors that can significantly influence your gameplay. For those familiar with the main story, Injectors offer enhancements, but in Horde Assault, they bring modifiers that reshape the experience. As you strive to become a Legendary Survivor, you’ll encounter 24 distinct Injectors—half offering beneficial boosts at the cost of increased difficulty, and the other half providing survival perks with penalties to your score.
Let me tantalize you with a teaser of what to expect:
-
Exploding Freakers: On death, Freakers will explode—an advantageous Injector for when horde sizes are overwhelming.
- Wanted: Begin with maximum heat level. Here, the challenge escalates from the start, demanding strength and strategy for survival.
Earning rewards through your time in Horde Assault is part of the journey, with 35 levels to climb featuring rewards like Injectors, character skins, and patch cosmetics. This includes six new characters making their debut in the game, like O’Brian and fan-favorite Skizzo. Patches, making a comeback from our 2019 challenges, are purely cosmetic this time, perfect for showing off in Enhanced Photo Mode. Better yet, these carry over to the main story, offering continuity and customization.
Horde Assault is designed as end game content but is accessible right from the get-go in Days Gone Remastered. We recommend newcomers first explore the main story for full immersion and understanding of the mechanics, but hey, if you’re itching for immediate action against the iconic hordes, go right ahead. Expect up to 10 additional hours of gameplay layered on top of the rich content already found in Days Gone.
