nDreams, the creative minds behind the arena shooter FRENZIES, have revealed that their game will be stepping out of early access later this year. However, fans looking forward to a PSVR 2 release might be in for a surprise, as the studio has decided not to pursue that path.
In a recent announcement, nDreams mentioned, “We have some thrilling PS VR2 news coming your way soon, even though FRENZIES won’t make it to the PSVR 2.”
“We’re thrilled to announce that when FRENZIES exits Early Access this year, it will remain free-to-play! Since its debut on Meta Quest, players have responded enthusiastically to the game’s distinctive chaos, and we want to enhance that experience as we transition out of Early Access,” the statement continued. “In our pursuit of perfecting FRENZIES, we’ve made the tough call to focus exclusively on the Meta Quest platform, leaving the PS VR2 plans behind. While this might dishearten those looking forward to a PS VR2 version, we promise some exciting PS VR2 updates are on the horizon!”
“So, brace yourself for more FRENZIES news in the upcoming weeks as we unveil our plans for the Early Access roadmap.”
Frenzies made its initial appearance on Quest 2 and higher devices in October 2024. The game is all about rapid-paced arena battles, offering a solid VR-native experience with its mix of weapons and game modes.
Even though PSVR 2 fans might be disappointed not to have the game at launch, nDreams’ decision seems strategically sound. Recently, the Quest platform has seen a surge in younger users, especially with the introduction of the $300 Quest 3S. This shift has bolstered the market for free-to-play games.
Back in February, Samantha Ryan, Meta’s VP of Metaverse Content, emphasized, “We anticipate that free-to-play (F2P) will become a widely adopted strategy for developers, who have mainly depended on premium apps thus far. However, we believe F2P will coexist with premium apps without leading to their replacement.”
Considering the challenging economic climate, nDreams likely aims to maximize their game’s reach by targeting the most promising player base. This approach comes as nDreams recently merged its nDreams Studio Orbital and nDreams Studio into a new entity called ‘Compass’ after a round of layoffs.
As one of the trailblazers in XR gaming, nDreams has been responsible for a slew of high-quality VR experiences, from Vendetta Forever and Power Wash Simulator VR to Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, and Synapse, to name just a few.
