These days, we’re blessed with a plethora of fantastic third-person RPGs and a wealth of brilliant co-op games. However, newcomers to these genres have plenty of opportunities to carve a niche for themselves. Eydigard aims to capture the attention of World of Warcraft enthusiasts, wrapping them in a world filled with stunning Scandinavian landscapes and the unique ability to shapeshift into a bear.
Now, Eydigard hadn’t caught my attention before, but after diving into it for the first time, it certainly has piqued my interest as a compelling RPG venture. Its down-to-earth graphics, strategic camera angles, and the types of environments you’ll traverse give off a subtle WoW vibe. Yet, with its richly wooded backdrops, farmlands, and Norwegian fjords, there’s a strong hint of Valheim spirit infused throughout.
The storyline of Eydigard might not revolutionize the genre, but its exploration of a less typical setting for RPGs makes it intriguing. You journey through a land once teeming with life but now ravaged by a plague that’s driven out its people and let mythical creatures roam freely. Your mission is to scour this open world and rid various farms of the plague. Throughout your adventure, you’ll encounter diverse factions and groups with distinct beliefs and agendas, challenging your ethics as you choose sides and see the effects on Eydigard’s power dynamics. Your decisions on which farms to liberate from the plague carry significant weight as well.
You’ll find yourself wandering this world alone or with friends, facing massive corrupted creatures and beings drawn from Norwegian folklore. Yet, your arsenal includes a rare power: the ability to shapeshift into different animals, each offering unique capabilities. Currently, gameplay footage teases transformation into a lynx and a brown bear, but I’m hopeful we’ll see more creatures introduced.
If this sounds like it’s right up your alley, there’s good news – you won’t have to wait long to get a taste of it. A free demo of Eydigard is set to debut during Steam Next Fest, which runs from Monday, February 24 to Monday, March 3.
