Everyone is quite aware of how disappointing Sony’s Spider-Verse, minus Spider-Man, has been. Despite this, the director of Kraven the Hunter is hopeful you’ll give his new film a chance.
Let’s recap: Venom, Morbius, and Madame Web—three films linked to Spider-Man, all crafted by Sony, and widely regarded as less than stellar. Sure, Venom might be the entertaining kind of bad, but let’s stay on track for now. Even J.C. Chandor, the director responsible for the soon-to-be-released Kraven the Hunter, is aware of the lukewarm reception of previous films. In a chat with ComicBook, Chandor acknowledged the mixed reviews but still holds out hope that moviegoers will give his latest offering a fair shot.
In his own words, Chandor explained, “I don’t want to delve too deep here, but my main goal as a filmmaker, especially over these past few years where you all have been deep in this realm, is to address the concerns that some fans have had with Sony’s Spider-Man Universe decisions and outcomes. While some films have turned out to be quite successful, there’s indeed been a mixed bag. So, I’m just asking for folks to give us a chance, come support this film, and maybe forget some of the past disappointments.”
I must admit, he seems to be stretching the truth a bit. Out of the five live-action films, three have been successful, but those just happen to be the Venom movies—a much loved and recognized character, unlike Morbius or Madame Web. So, to call it a “mixed success rate” might not be entirely accurate.
Chandor continued by expressing his belief that fans will “realize we’ve done everything we can to offer a really fun story. By the end of the movie, there will be plenty of potential for future developments. My main focus was to make sure our film stands on its own, is well-protected, and simply tells a great story. Then we can look forward to exploring more exciting possibilities.”
And as for those possible future developments? Well, it’s anyone’s guess at this point. Everything hangs on whether the movie performs well, so we’ll just have to see what unfolds.
Kraven the Hunter is releasing very soon, hitting theaters on December 13. Keep an eye out!
