### Merciless As The Sea
Before becoming the feared Houndmaster, Portia Maye was on a path to a normal life, warmed by her father’s affection and driven by a thirst for adventure. Her youth was painted by maritime tales aboard her father’s ship, Nightsdream, until the fateful day the notorious pirate Mad Molak seized it, leaving a trail of bloodshed.
Portia survived as a celestial navigator, but her captivity fueled her desire for vengeance. She set a deadly course, steering her father’s ship into the infamous Dragon’s Tooth, bringing doom to her captors. Miraculously—or perhaps by sinister design—Portia was the one left standing, with Snug, her faithful puppy, as her sole companion.
Once a testament to survival, Portia endured the aftermath of the Nightsdream massacre and years stranded on the Dragon’s Tooth. Her soul, however, brimmed with a relentless hunger for vengeance, and that fire intensified as time went by.
Unbeknownst to Portia, the Dragon’s Tooth harbored a Bleed, where realms intertwine seamlessly like blurred colors on a canvas.
As Lead Narrative Director Jessi Thind notes, “Encountering a Bleed either ends you or drives you insane.” This madness honed Portia’s savagery, transforming her into a Killer who would ultimately outdo Molak’s cruelty. Once her revenge was fulfilled, The Houndmaster’s fate within The Entity’s realm was sealed.
Her enduring humanity found refuge in Snug, her steadfast ally, whose abilities to track and hunt down Survivors are pivotal to The Houndmaster’s Power.
### For The Black Talon
Taurie Cain grew up in the shadowy corridors of the Black Talon, a faction of the sinister Black Vale, hell-bent on unlocking The Entity’s secrets. Her parents’ ill-fated exploration of a Bleed set her on a dark trajectory after she leaped into its confines in their wake.
Fully committed to this ominous mission, Taurie soared up the ranks. Unique among other Survivors like Haddie Kaur and Elodie Rakoto, who encountered the Black Vale’s dangers, Taurie seemed to embrace it, seeing The Entity as the gateway to transcendence.
Thind elaborates, “As a Black Talon disciple, Taurie believes her deeds ultimately serve humanity’s greater good. However, the paths she walked grew ever darker, culminating in a crossroads with no return.”
Faced with executing Jordan Rois, survivor Haddie Kaur’s stepbrother and a persistent Black Talon adversary, Taurie hesitated, a pivotal pause before her introduction to The Fog.
In this shadowy realm, she uncovered harsh truths about her fealty—a ceaseless cycle of torment and chaos. Yet, Taurie remains unwavering, convinced her true purpose remains undiscovered.
Thind adds, “Her connection to the Vale might actually help her in The Fog, trusting it all aligns with a plan. Taurie longs for recognition by The Entity, dreaming to evolve into a Killer.”
An intriguing puzzle: why did The Entity select Taurie as a Survivor initially?
“For reasons still unknown, The Entity craves emotions,” Thind explains. “Its decision may hinge on the advantage of including someone who naturally clashes with other Survivors. Taurie’s presence, swirled in misunderstanding and mistrust, stirs up invaluable emotional conflict for The Entity to savor.”
Despite the tension, Taurie’s survival instincts will see her through, with perks designed to withstand the Killer’s gaze while exploiting her own pain to escape.
Interestingly, both Portia and Taurie glimpsed the Bleeds, yet only Taurie emerged mostly intact. One wonders if their fates might’ve been reversed under different circumstances. However, once your course is charted towards the Fog, diverging from it is a near impossibility.
