This past week has seen a flurry of leaks surrounding the eventual design of the much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. The culmination of these leaks arrived in a surprising move from Dbrand, who showcased a complete 3D render of the console, paired with a redesigned version of their Killswitch carrying case, typically intended for handheld PCs. According to The Verge, Dbrand CEO Adam Ijaz mentioned that they accessed the actual size details of the Switch 2 through a 3D scan of the real device. The dimensions clock in at roughly 270mm wide when the Joy-Cons are attached, or 200mm without, standing at 116mm tall, and 14mm thick.
What stands out about the design is the significantly larger 8-inch screen, a sizable jump from the 7.2-inch of the Switch OLED and the 6.2-inch of the original Switch. There’s also an additional “C” button—speculated to be for capture—on the right Joy-Con. The controllers now feature a more pronounced curve and are magnetically detachable, with USB-C ports located on both the top and bottom. A wider U-shaped kickstand, reminiscent of the improved stand on the Switch OLED, completes the package.
All signs point to an evolution in design compared to the Switch OLED, with hints of a launch as early as Q1 2025. However, unlike its predecessor, it seems it won’t sport an OLED screen. Instead, leaks suggest it will come with an 8-inch 1080p IPS LCD, hopefully offering better quality than the previous LCD version.
Moving on to the Killswitch design for the Switch 2, it deviates from the typical heavy-duty kickstand or full-enclosure casings Dbrand is known for with products like the Steam Deck. This time, considering the detachable Joy-Cons, the case separates into segments and features a teal bungee cord to keep everything secure. It’s a visually appealing design, and given Dbrand’s track record with protective cases, the final product should be a hit.
For those interested in a more unaltered view of the Nintendo Switch 2, while we might not have that just yet, Dbrand’s leaked specs match up with a 3D-printed prototype shared by the YouTube channel SwitchUp earlier this week. This mock-up should offer a rough idea of how the base model might look and feel.
The substantial leak from Dbrand, who seemingly aren’t under any NDA constraints, strongly hints at a pending announcement and release date for the Nintendo Switch 2. Previous statements suggested the console’s release might occur before the end of 2024. Additionally, Nintendo has internally set an ambitious deadline of March 2025 for sharing official details about the Switch 2. With this timeline in mind, it’s no wonder that both Nintendo and accessory makers like Dbrand are gearing up for what promises to be another landmark in the hybrid console market.
