Since Christmas Eve, Ayaneo has been steadily unveiling more details about its hotly anticipated Ayaneo 3 handheld gaming device. The most exciting update so far is the introduction of swappable control modules, allowing a degree of customization in handheld gaming that we’ve never seen before. While we’ve seen similar designs in controllers like the Victrix Pro BFG, it’s thrilling to see this innovation in a handheld format, particularly with the inclusion of durable hall-effect sensors in the analog sticks and triggers.
Ayaneo has been active on Twitter and Discord, sharing glimpses of the Ayaneo 3 via photos and a video that highlights various angles and features of the device and its control modules. When we last discussed the Ayaneo 3 back in November, we knew it would be available in both Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and Ryzen 7 8840U configurations. We’re still out of the loop on pricing and further tech specs, other than the choice between LCD and OLED screens. However, with an official launch event slated for “Late January 2025,” we’re optimistic that more details will emerge soon.
The Ayaneo 3’s modular design goes beyond just swapping control modules; users can invert and completely change out individual buttons, making it versatile for any game genre. This setup is perfect for fans of six-button fighting games like Street Fighter or those who enjoy classic Sega console games, thanks to the six-face-button module. For games that suit a desktop experience, a touchpad module could be just the ticket, especially with Steam Input support adding to its versatility.
Although we don’t have pricing information yet, the Ayaneo 3’s flexibility appears appealing, even for those on a budget. Users who choose the Ryzen 7 8840U with a 7-inch LCD might find it a more economical choice than the OLED option. However, it remains to be seen if the trade-off is justified, pending the price reveal. Still, it’s primed to be a strong contender among next year’s high-end handhelds, with its standout focus on modular input flexibility paving the way.
