About a year ago, I embarked on a journey of crafting 3rd Party 64 episodes focused on the various Army Men games that were launched for the Nintendo 64. Just around that period, The Video Game History Foundation shared a festive commercial for Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes, which happened to be one of the titles I was diving into.
In an interesting turn of events, I found myself in a chat with Frank Cifaldi, the director at VGHF, discussing a fresh collection they had received from Michael Mendheim, the creative mastermind behind Sarge’s Heroes. Before I knew it, my inbox was flooded with documents detailing the development of the Army Men series, and the breadth of my project grew considerably. By late summer of 2024, Frank extended an invitation for me to appear on an upcoming episode of The Video Game History Hour. It was a chance to have a firsthand conversation with Mendheim about his games, promising yet more layers of understanding.
This particular episode of 3rd Party 64 is packed with segments from that insightful interview, alongside findings from the treasure trove of documents VGHF shared with me. Their invaluable efforts have been crucial in allowing such in-depth coverage of these games.
And there’s even more to share!
While delving deep into Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes, I gathered more information than I could possibly fit into the initial video. This prompted the creation of a second video, highlighting what I believe are the nine most fascinating, previously unexplored details uncovered during my research. You can catch this video on The Video Game History Foundation’s YouTube channel.
