Intel is finally addressing the ongoing performance issues with its Arc GPUs when paired with older processors, stepping up to investigate and resolve the problem.
Intel Tackles Arc GPU Performance Challenges with Legacy Processors
When Intel’s Arc B580 and B570 GPUs hit the scene, they seemed promising thanks to their larger VRAM compared to the competition. However, they didn’t quite make waves on performance charts. One key factor holding back the acceptance of these Battlemage GPUs has been their weak optimization.
We aren’t just talking about Intel’s GPU drivers here. The issue has been the disappointing performance of Arc Battlemage GPUs when paired with older CPUs. You might recall that Hardware Unboxed was one of the first to spotlight this lackluster performance, particularly with processors like the Ryzen 2000 series and 9th Gen Intel Core CPUs.
After quite some time of silence, Intel has acknowledged the issue on its forums. Here’s what they had to say:
Thank you for your patience. We are aware of reports of performance sensitivity in some games when paired with older generation processors.
We have increased our platform coverage to include more configurations in our validation process, and we are continuing to investigate optimizations.
From Intel’s statement, it seems the company has long been aware of this issue but didn’t prioritize optimizations. Now, they plan to make sure more configurations are covered. While they haven’t given a specific timeline for the resolution, improvements are expected soon.
Intel needs to make software updates because, in terms of hardware, the Arc series stands toe-to-toe with its previous-gen competitors in modern games. The notable performance drop when using Intel’s earlier CPUs was certainly unexpected.
With upcoming patches, Intel aims to stand alongside AMD and NVIDIA in the GPU race. That said, improving performance doesn’t automatically mean Intel will gain a foothold in the market. The Arc Battlemage GPUs are still hard to find, and their limited availability has almost pushed Intel out of the budget GPU segment.
