The Binary Mill, an indie XR studio, has exciting news for PlayStation VR 2 enthusiasts: their highly-anticipated space adventure, Into Black (2024), is finally making its debut on the platform. This means the riveting, Deep Rock Galactic-inspired gameplay is stepping out from being a Quest exclusive.
Since its initial launch on the Quest platform this past October, Into Black has delighted both solo players and groups of up to four friends with its thrilling resource scavenging, tool upgrading, and spaceship repair mechanics. Spread across over 20 dynamic levels, each offering its unique biomes, players will face a variety of challenges and enemies to collect parts crucial for their escape from this perilous alien planet.
Excitingly, the PSVR 2 release isn’t just about reliving the existing adventure. Fans will also get to experience the all-new ‘Singularity’ mode—a player-versus-player-versus-environment (PvPvE) experience. Here, you’ll go head-to-head with up to 11 other players in an intense online competition. The developers describe it as a strategic challenge where you’ll need to form uneasy alliances to thrive in a constantly diminishing maze, collecting loot with care. However, an overly ambitious approach might just cost you everything.
Moreover, this transition to PSVR 2 comes with a significant overhaul. Expect remastered environments packed with new visual fidelity, enhanced dynamic lighting, shadows, HDR capabilities, and eye-tracked foveated rendering, all made possible by the advanced PSVR 2 technology. Adding to this immersive experience, the improved haptics make use of the adaptive triggers on the PS Sense controllers, along with the headset’s rumble feature.
While there’s still some anticipation around whether cross-play with Quest will be available, initial word from the studio is that this feature won’t be part of the launch package (see update below).
Update: The studio has confirmed to Road to VR that cross-play with Quest will not be available at launch for the PSVR 2 version.
Though gamers are eagerly awaiting a deep dive into the PSVR 2’s enhancements through an official trailer, the studio has teased a few screenshots and gifs, as seen above. As for the release date? It’s still under wraps, but The Binary Mill assures fans that it’s “coming soon.” In the meantime, PlayStation VR 2 users can add Into Black to their wishlist over on the PlayStation Store to stay in the loop.
