The voice actors behind the French version of Apex Legends have reportedly taken a stand against an agreement that would have used their voices to train artificial intelligence, effectively refusing to sign it.
Pascale Chemin, the voice behind Wraith in the French rendition of the battle royale game, shared on Twitter that a publisher—likely Electronic Arts—intended to include a clause in their contracts for AI training. While the specific game and publisher aren’t directly named, all indicators suggest Apex Legends and EA are involved.
Moreover, Chemin reveals that 31 fellow voice actors have joined her in rejecting the agreement and have collectively penned a letter to the publisher outlining their refusal.
Chemin’s translated post on ResetEra highlights their concerns: "If we don’t unite now to ensure a protective clause for our voices becomes a standard in our contracts—not just for us, but across all video game dubbing studios—we will never achieve this protection, and we risk facing a significant setback," she stated.
She continues by acknowledging the harsh realities: "Refusing work in today’s climate seems impractical. Many of us face dwindling job opportunities and financial struggles, and a paycheck is certainly appealing. However, what’s being asked of us isn’t just to work. It’s to hand over our skills to train the AI that might replace us in the future. This demand stands contrary to what we strive to protect. They’re asking us to compromise our future job security by endorsing AI."
