He did promise he’d be back, and indeed, he is. After 34 years since Terminator 2 graced our cinema screens, an indie developer has taken a nostalgic journey back in time to bring us Terminator 2D: No Fate. This new action-packed side-scroller is a refreshing take inspired by James Cameron’s iconic sequel.
In the world of gaming, titles based on movies have always been a bit hit or miss, and lately, they’re somewhat scarce. However, one developer is confident they’ve cracked the code with Terminator 2D: No Fate, a side-scrolling retro game aimed at capturing the essence of the 1991 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic.
Bitmap Bureau, the mastermind behind the game, pitches it as a tribute to the arcade games of the ’80s and ’90s, remarking, “It’s the T2 game we should’ve had back in the day.” Based on the sneak peeks, they might be onto something.
That’s not to say we didn’t have some fun with the other Terminator 2 games; after all, Bethesda’s original The Terminator certainly consumed a hefty amount of our time. Yet, the official T2 games always seemed to rush through the cinematic moments.
In contrast, Bitmap Bureau is dedicated to fully capturing every detail of the film. The game portrays the look and feel of a ’90s arcade experience, powered by modern PC capabilities. The adrenaline-pumping truck chase scene stands out as particularly impressive.
One exciting aspect is the game’s promise of multiple endings. Just like James Cameron’s original masterpiece, which had two alternate endings depending on the version you watched, this game offers different conclusions. Personally, I’m intrigued by the possibility of a scenario where John Connor ‘accidentally’ takes a plunge into the vat of molten iron, setting off a mind-bending universe-ending paradox.
However, patience is a virtue as we’ll need to wait until September 5th for Terminator 2D: No Fate to hit the shelves.
