In 2025, Magic: The Gathering is shaking up the scene with some big changes aimed at its dedicated fan base. The iconic card game is scaling back its annual release of Magic Multiverse-themed sets to just three instead of four. In their place, the immensely popular Universes Beyond initiative steps up, delivering three sets of its own, rounding out the calendar to six sets a year. The real kicker? Wizards of the Coast is diving in with a full set inspired by the legendary Final Fantasy series.
Dubbed Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy, this exciting set promises to bring together the largest compilation of Final Fantasy artwork ever seen in a single game. It’s a nostalgic ride through the franchise’s history, appealing to everyone from Super Nintendo veterans to those currently deep into Final Fantasy 14.
Fans of Magic’s strategic gameplay are in for a treat too. This new Standard-legal set introduces fresh game mechanics that are sure to spice things up. A standout is the Saga Creatures, which is an innovative twist on the Saga mechanic first seen in 2018’s Dominaria. These unique cards represent creatures that grow stronger and gain new abilities as the game progresses.
Also making a comeback are the much-loved double-faced cards. As revealed on Tuesday, these will capture characters, iconic minigames, memorable story moments, and more, enriching the gameplay experience.
And for those who can’t get enough of classic Final Fantasy characters, they’re getting featured on 55 collectible borderless cards. With MagicCon just around the corner, expect tons of updates. It kicks off on February 21 in Chicago. Mark your calendars for June 13, when Magic: The Gathering – Final Fantasy officially hits the shelves.
