The PSVR 2 experienced a remarkable surge in holiday sales on Amazon US, selling nearly quintuple the number compared to the previous year.
This spike was largely fueled by a massive 42% discount during Black Friday and the holiday season, bringing the price of the Horizon bundle from $550 down to an enticing $350. With such a substantial price cut, it’s no surprise that the sales figures shot up. However, the extent of the increase was unexpected, as PSVR 2 achieved nearly five times the peak sales on Amazon US in the 2024 holiday season compared to 2023.
Now, it’s worth mentioning that the headset didn’t really see any significant discounts during the 2023 holiday period. Typically, one might assume that slashing a price by 50% would result in about 50% more sales. But in this scenario, PSVR 2 shattered expectations with its extraordinary price-to-sales relationship.
Sony kicked off the sale before Black Friday and continued it into the new year in 2024. The prolonged nature of the discount suggests that the company might have been aiming to clear out inventory, possibly hinting at the arrival of a new SKU—perhaps a different bundle or a more affordable redesign. While there are whispers that Sony could be prepping for a firesale to phase out the headset, I believe they’ll likely keep the PSVR 2 available at least until their next console generation, even if it doesn’t remain a primary focus for now.
