During Sony’s recent State of Play presentation, they unveiled the newest addition to Q-Games’ PixelJunk lineup, and it’s a visually stunning shooter that flips the genre on its head.
At the helm is Tomohisa Kuramitsu, also known as “Baiyon,” who gained recognition with the PixelJunk Eden series. His latest project, Dreams of Another, challenges traditional shooter conventions by focusing on creation through destruction, wrapped in a mesmerizing, dreamlike visual experience.
The preview teases players with a character who might have just rolled out of bed in pajamas, navigating through bizarre and surreal settings — from a carousel spewing horses in every direction to a robot sprinting along a city street.
While the mechanics remain partly shrouded in mystery, the trailer drops some intriguing hints. It proclaims messages like, “No creation without destruction… Destruction is not an end but a beginning beyond.” It suggests that the fleeting nature of life brings about an “explosion of life” when something is destroyed.
Q-Games highlights the use of point cloud rendering technology as a key factor in crafting the game’s distinctive look, enabling players to interact with and transform the landscape. The game’s rich visual effects might remind some of Rez Infinite, a fitting comparison given how effective that aesthetic was in virtual reality. Dreams of Another is slated for both the PS5 and PS VR2 platforms.
Reflecting on the project, Kuramitsu shared that the game breaks away from the typical shooter formula. Rather than focusing on weapons for destruction, players will wield them to shape and bring to life the chaotic surroundings.
Mark your calendars — Dreams of Another is set to make its debut in 2025, promising an intriguing evolution in the shooter genre.
