Some of us just can’t get enough of games that offer endless exploration. It’s no surprise that many of these gems fall into the sci-fi universe—after all, it provides a perfect backdrop of countless worlds waiting to be discovered. However, creating such expansive games is quite the tightrope walk. On one side, you don’t want players aimlessly zipping around a vast but empty galaxy. On the flip side, stuffing that universe with endless fetch quests isn’t appealing either. Yet, when developers nail this balance, we end up on one unforgettable adventure ride. Hoping to offer just that experience is Cubic Odyssey, the game we’re diving into today.
Developed by Atypical Games and brought to us by Gaijin Entertainment, Cubic Odyssey is set to unravel as you find yourself crash-landed on an unknown planet. From there, your mission begins: mine resources, refine materials, and craft a myriad of creations—from tools and outposts to vehicles, and eventually, the starships that promise the liberty to explore the galaxy’s vastness.
In every direction you look in Cubic Odyssey, your gaze will fall upon a multitude of star systems brimming with planets ready for exploration. Each has its own ecosystem, complete with day and night cycles, and you’ll find bustling cities, remote pirate outposts, and ancient ruins begging to be unearthed. At its core, the game’s epic quest is to halt the Red Darkness—an inexorable infection menacingly mutating wildlife, consuming planets, and endangering all life.
The game promises a seamless integration of ground, air, and space travel. As players, we’ll get to warp across star systems and cruise swiftly between planets. Closer to the ground, the adventure continues as you zip across alien terrains or plunge into subterranean ruins on foot. It’s a game that molds itself around however you wish to explore.
If you’re not one for solitary adventures, Cubic Odyssey has you covered with its co-op mode. Teaming up with fellow explorers, you’ll take on formidable foes, orchestrate orbital bombardments, or collaborate on constructing massive structures. Gather your friends and brace yourselves for joint escapades.
“We intend to build a boundless open world where every planet, every system, and every moment is yours to shape,” says Andrei Lopata, the CEO of Bucharest-based Atypical Games. His words set the stage for a world of limitless potential awaiting your influence.
Cubic Odyssey is shaping up to be a captivating romp for those who revel in abundant activities and exploration. If the boundless cosmos calls to you, keep an eye out, as this title is slated to hit PCs, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X later this year. Stay tuned for more updates as we edge closer to its grand debut.
