Virtual reality has found a darling in Blade & Sorcery, a combat simulator that recently celebrated its full 1.0 release in June 2024. But Warpfrog, the team behind this beloved title, isn’t resting on its laurels. They’ve got a new game in the pipeline, promising to be as “highly moddable” as their popular physics-driven combat game.
While specifics on the upcoming project are still under wraps, Warpfrog has teased that this VR game will carry their signature style. This means players can look forward to the familiar physics-based interactions and an emphasis on lifelike simulation that they’ve come to expect from the studio.
Moreover, the team confirmed that modding will remain just as accessible as it is in Blade & Sorcery. Fans will recall how easy it is to manually tweak the game or use Nexus Mod Manager to enhance their games. Whether you’re looking to add some flair with extra weapon sparks or diving deep with user-generated maps and weapons, the modding possibilities are vast.
In a conversation with Meta last October, Warpfrog mentioned they’re adopting a new development framework for this next chapter. The team aims to untangle some of the ‘spaghetti code’ that inevitably accumulates during extensive early access phases, using insights gained from Blade & Sorcery’s prolonged development cycle.
“We’re moving away from that legacy code, building from the ground up on a fresh engine. Our new framework is designed to elevate the entire team’s development process, marking our first full-scale game build with an entire team on board from start to finish,” the studio explained.
Expectations for Warpfrog’s future endeavors are sky-high, and for good reason. What began with developer KospY as a solo mission has blossomed into a powerhouse team nearing 30 people strong.
The June update brought new elements to Blade & Sorcery, introducing the ‘Crystal Hunt’ story mode. This major addition transforms the game into more than just a visceral combat sandbox; it now offers an expansive adventure brimming with upgrade systems, rich narratives, and a sprawling, interconnected world.
“Looking ahead, the excitement is palpable… The experiences and skills we’ve honed over the last five years have prepared us for even more ambitious projects. Thanks to your support, we’re poised to develop bigger and better games than ever before,” Warpfrog shared in a recent update on Steam.
Warpfrog’s momentum is a testament to their growth and the immersive experiences they’ve crafted, leaving the VR community eagerly anticipating their next groundbreaking work.
