Riot Games, the company behind League of Legends, has announced plans to take action against content creators who breach its terms of service, even if these violations occur outside of the game itself.
In a recent website update, Riot shared that starting January 3rd, it will begin banning creators who engage in behaviors such as using slurs or offensive language directed at other players when its games are part of the content they produce. This decision comes as an enhancement to their ‘Off-Platform Conduct’ terms.
“Our goal with this update is to better safeguard players from harmful behavior they might encounter in different aspects of their gaming experience,” the company explained.
This policy specifically targets content where Riot’s games are featured as the backdrop. While Riot won’t actively monitor all social media platforms, they now reserve the right to impose in-game penalties if inappropriate content comes to their attention. For instance, if a content creator hurls hateful slurs at an opposing player or teammate during a live stream but not through in-game chat or voice communication, Riot can still impose penalties as if the conduct occurred directly within the game.
